An addendum to the above: on the way to Morelia from Patzcuaro we stopped in the village of Cuanajo, looking for rustic furniture which, we were informed, was produced there. We found one store and one woodworking shop which were open. All other places were locked shut due to the fact that most of the locals had disappeared to the US, or so we were told. Not a good feeling!
